Is MERV 13 better than MERV 11 for a 18x30x1 filter?
MERV 13 captures finer particles — everything MERV 11 does plus smoke, bacteria and virus-carrying particles. MERV 11 captures everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and smog particles. Higher MERV filters more but restricts airflow slightly more, so match it to your system and needs.
Will MERV 13 hurt my airflow or furnace?
On most modern residential systems the difference between MERV 11 and 13 in a 1" filter is small. On older or low-static-pressure systems, a higher MERV can strain the blower — if in doubt, stick with MERV 11 or check your unit's spec.
Do they cost much more?
MERV 13 usually costs a little more per filter than MERV 11. Buying multi-packs closes most of the gap since you'll change it every 60–90 days either way.
